The best christmas merch starts in july.

It sounds early. It isn't. The holiday gifts people actually keep get planned in summer — and here's why good ideas need the lead time.

It's July, and we're already thinking about Christmas. Not because the shops are — they're not yet — but because the gifts worth giving take a while to get right.
We like holiday projects. Not because December is coming, but because it's one of the few moments a company gets to give its team or its clients something personal. Something that looks like a brand, not like a giveaway.

Good merch doesn't end up in a drawer.

You know the other kind. The pen, the stress ball, the tote that goes straight into a bottom drawer and never comes out again. It cost money and bought nothing.
The difference isn't the budget. It's whether the thing is good enough that someone actually wants to keep it — wear it, use it, reach for it without thinking. That's the whole test. A gift that gets used is a brand people carry around with them. A gift that gets stashed away is just a cost.

What actually makes the difference.

Good merch isn't luck. It's a handful of specific choices — the same ones we keep writing about:
Get those right and you don't need a big logo doing the talking — the quality does it. Get them wrong and no amount of branding saves it.

And that's exactly why it starts in summer.

Here's the part that sounds early but isn't: none of the above happens fast.
There's sampling before anything goes into production. Colour gets matched against a physical reference and checked — a lab dip for dyed fabric, a yarn card for knitted pieces. Then the actual making, step by step, and the trip from our production in Portugal to Switzerland, which we'd rather do over land than by air. Rush all of that into December, and the first thing to slip is the quality.
So the nicest gifts under the tree were usually decided in July or August. Not because of Christmas — because good ideas need the lead time.

Thinking about something of your own this year?

If you'd like to make something people actually keep, now is the right time to start. Tell us the idea — we'll help you shape it.
